In this day and age, protecting the skin from the harsh effects of the sun is self-explanatory. No one wants to suffer from sunburn or age quicker, and there are many studies out there as to whether or not it is better to use conventional sun block or opt for a more natural version. But what effects does UV radiation have on our hair?
The hair shaft keratin fiber structure is sensitive to external factors and excessive sun exposure is the most frequent cause of the hair’s structural impairments. UVB rays are responsible for protein loss by weakening or breaking the protein bonds, whereas UVA rays destroy the colour pigments in the hair, which results in colour fading. Heat from the sun weakens the hair strands’ outer layer, causing it to look dry, brittle, frizzy, and create split ends.
What can we do to protect our hair from the sun?
Protecting the cuticle is very important for keeping hair shaft intact; either by avoiding the sun during peak time or using hair care products with UV filters.
The organic filter called ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, protects the hair from UVB radiation. Leave-in conditioners are the way to go. The protecting effects of shampoos and rinse-out conditioners diminish once the products are washed out. Hair sprays only protect the outer layer of the hair, as the cuticle does not absorb them. Rake a blob of leave-in conditioner that contains vitamins A, C, and E, which also protect the hair from the damaging effects of free radicals.
Give your hair a weekly deep treatment for extra nourishment and care. What I love doing is apply coconut oil to my hair and leaving it on overnight. The moisturising effects do wonders in repairing my hair, leaving it soft and looking luscious. Planning your summer vac and short on cosmetics space?
